Antony Gormley ‘Event Horizon’ New York
Following on from the success of Antony Gormley's installation Event Horizon
in on London's South Bank in 2007 (see previous blog post), it moved to
New York last year. Between March 26 and August 15, 2010, thirty-one
life-size body sculptures of the artist, cast in iron and fibreglass,
were installed on the pathways and sidewalks of Manhatten’s historic
Madison Square Park, as well as the rooftops of the many architectural
treasures that populate New York’s vibrant Flatiron District. Event Horizon
marked Gormley’s United States public art debut - a milestone for an
artist whose work has garnered worldwide acclaim over the past 25 years.
At the time Gormley commented: “I’m thrilled to be working with New York: people and place, I don’t know what is going to happen, what it will look and feel like, but I want to play with the city and people’s perceptions. My intention is to get the sculptures as close to the edge of the buildings as possible. The field of the installation should have no defining boundary. The gaze is the principle dynamic of the work; the idea of looking and finding, or looking and seeking, and in the process perhaps re-assessing your own position in the world. So in encountering these peripheral things, perhaps one becomes aware of one’s status of embedment.”

在過去的一個月里，題為《視界》(Event Horizon)的安東尼•葛姆雷(Antony Gormley)的雕塑群可謂城中大熱話題，“無處不在”也因此成為英國媒體為之使用最多的形容詞。在南岸區(South Bank)的周圍，滑鐵盧橋(Waterloo Bridge)的南北兩側，伊麗莎白女王音樂廳(Queen Elizabeth Hall)和共濟會會堂(Freemason's Hall)的屋頂，31座真人大小、以身材頎長的藝術家本人為原型鑄成的鐵像，分布于黑瓦德畫廊(Hayward Gallery)方圓一英里內的等20余處公共場所。
除去“人和空間的關系”的解讀外，安東尼•葛姆雷(Antony Gormley)的醉翁之意這回似乎正寓于這“無處不在”中。雕塑被置于不同地點的不同角度，靜止著，審視著，一群仿佛赤條條無牽掛的無表情鐵像，面對著 一群行色匆匆的血肉之軀。前者出其不意地出現，攔截著後者的腳步與目光，強迫性的停頓與間斷似乎發出與高更(Paul Gauguin)曾有的同樣的質問︰我們從哪里來？我們是誰？我們往哪里去？(Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?)
同樣的質問在三個星期後又發生在黑瓦德畫廊(Hayward Gallery)內，從5月17日到8月19日，名為《盲光》(Blind Light)的安東尼•葛姆雷(Antony Gormley)作品展在這里舉行。這是迄今為止藝術家舉辦的最大規模的室內展，包含了1979年到2007年間的雕塑、繪畫、攝影及裝置作品等。
其中最引人注目的便是此展覽的主打作品、應畫廊之邀而創作的裝置作品《盲光》(Blind Light)——一個長10米、寬8米、高三米的充滿蒸汽的玻璃房，依舊是以安東尼•葛姆雷(Antony Gormley)為模型灌鑄的雕塑矗立在中央。觀眾身處的環境由城市被置入到了這個霧靄重重，能見度只有兩英寸的空間里，方向感隨著視覺能力的喪失而殆 盡，人們四處摸索，建築空間作為掩體的保護此刻只會令人更加無所適從。這種幽閉感會讓人變得沉靜釋放，也會讓人不勝免惶恐，但無論怎樣，“出口”將毫無疑 問地成為所有人的終極目標。
